Macclesfield Half Marathon - 26th September 2010

Message from Colin Ardron...

The race is fast approaching and we are down on entries compared to the same time last year! Are you doing your bit to publicise the race?

It would be great if every member of the club recruited one person to run the race. How you do this is up to you -it could be by encouragement, nagging, bribery, threats or a combination of all of these. If you are not helping on the day, then why not enter the race yourself? Don't want to hear excuses, if my daughter can do it off virtually no training last year, then so can you. She said that completing her first half marathon gave her more satisfaction than eating a giant bag of honey coated popcorn. Now if you knew my daughter's sweet tooth you would be as amazed as I was by this confession. So don't be a wuss, there is still time to get some training in and recruit someone else as well. It's a highly rated event judging by the very positive feedback from previous participants and all proceeds go to two deserving charities, East Cheshire Hospice and the Macclesfield Track Appeal. So what are you waiting for?

Website Guide

This page is designed to give an overview of how to find your way around the site and how it works.

Techie Bit

This version of the website employs a "content management system" called joomla . This means the majority of content is stored in a database and the site is managed through an administration interface. Each page is dynamically generated, presenting content based on administration rules. This contrasts significantly to the "hand crafted" design and update methods of the previous site. One downside of this is that the site will be slower at times. However this is outweighed by the benefit of having the content in the database. Most of the site is hosted in the US, so it will be a lot more responsive in the mornings compared to later at night.

Articles

A small amount of content for the site is "static" (like this page) that is linked to via a menu entry. This data tends to be reference material with a longer shelf life.

All the other articles are managed more dynamically. Firstly new articles are put in one of two high level "sections" - either "General" or "Disciplines". The "General" items will be more announcements or items of general interest to all club members. Those articles destined for a particular discipline will then be allocated to one of the following "categories" - track and field, cross country, road running, fell running.

When a new article is added, I determine whether it should appear on the front page or not. (This is merely a matter of ticking a box in an administration screen, rather than the cut and paste duplication I had to do in the past.)

The content stored under each of the different discipline "categories" can be viewed by following the links in the menu bar at the top of the page.

When you visit a particular discipline page, you can also use the "index" menu link on the left hand side to get a list of articles by title.

Individual articles may have introductory text that is displayed, but may have more content that is only displayed when you click on the "read more" link.

The front page, the discipline pages and index listings can all have content that extends beyond the current page on display. Watch out for "more" links at the bottom of the page and "page 1 of .." type messages.

Content is generally displayed newest (either creation or last modified time) first.

Searching

The site support a search facility that will search all content type stored in the database. This can be reached from the menu link at the top of each page.

Contacts

The site has a contacts page reached via the "contact us" menu link at the top of the page. This lists the club officers, and if you click on one you will get more information plus possibly an email form. I do not generally publish email addresses to avoid web crawlers harvesting addresses for spamming.

Other Features

The calendar is as before, and is hosted on the old server. It will not be found in "searches".

The forum is as before, and is also still on the old server. If you want to participate (don't be shy!) you will need to register and I will activate your account. If you have any problems with this, send me an email.

The photo gallery is new, and is hosted on the same site as the new content server. It is also database driven and is a lot more flexible than the old gallery format. I can also enable other "trusted" users to upload photos.

Note for child protection reasons we can not publish pictures of juniors.
